In today's busy, techy world, finding time for quiet reading is a luxury. That's why D.E.A.R.(Drop Everything and Read) Time is so valuable--whether at home or at school. For just 20 minutes a day, children stop what they're doing and read anything they like.
Here's a few ways to implement D.E.A.R. Time:
*Create a place to read: beanbags, blankets, corner of the room, on a rug, rocking chair--or a desk if space is limited.
*Let children choose what they read: book, cookbook, graphic novel, magazine, comic book. Pick something that interests them.
*Make it a class event (school) or family event (home). Parents can read with their children.
Teachers should model reading as well--not grade papers!
*Set a designated time/day. (As a former teacher, I scheduled D.E.A.R. Time on Friday afternoons. I found this to be a great way to end a busy week of learning.)
What are the benefits of reading 20 minutes a day -- at home or at school:
*Expands vocabulary - introduces new words.
*Boosts comprehension.
*Strengthens focus and attention span.
*Reduces stress - calming, screen-free atmosphere.
*Improves writing skills.
Reading has a positive effect on children's academic performance.
In summary, D.E.A.R. Time is not a reading program. It's just 20 minutes to inspire children to read and enjoy what they're reading. Try it yourself. Grab a book and read for the pleasure of reading.
